About These Programs Known as free and reduced fee dental programs, community dental clinics treat low-income individuals and families without dental insurance. They serve patients in need, including those on traditional Medicaid. Throughout the state, these programs take the form of community care organizations, dental schools, and dental hygiene clinics. At these centers, dentists, dental hygienists, and other trained staff provide necessary dental care for patients who cannot otherwise afford it. Free dental care programs serve patients most in need of dental treatment at no cost to the patient. Reduced fee dental care programs offer lower-income individuals treatment at a much lower cost than a private dental office. Some of these clinics charge lower, fixed prices for specific treatments. Others charge for services using a need-based sliding scale. Who can receive free or reduced fee dental treatment at one of these clinics? Some clinics provide dental care for children and families. Others limit their care to only children, adults, or senior citizens. All treat individuals and/or families from lower-income households. Eligibility for treatment may change from one clinic to another. We recommend contacting your closest program (see the directory above) directly to learn about their requirements. What dental issues and treatments are covered? The services offered vary from program to program. Certain clinics only provide free or reduced cost dental cleanings and exams. These clinics focus on prevention of dental diseases and maintenance of good oral health habits. Others provide care for common oral health issues like gum disease, cavities, tooth loss, and tooth decay.
