The Michigan Dental Association Foundation welcomed its 2012-13 scholarship recipients April 18 at a reception held during the MDA’s Annual Session in Novi.
The recipients and their families were invited to attend the MDA House of Delegate meeting that morning to hear Dr. Jeffery Johnston, outgoing MDA president, speak.
Michigan Dental Association Foundation awards scholarships each year to dental, dental hygiene and dental assisting students through its Robert D. Mitus, John G. Nolen, George Bletsas and Bill Schumann/MDA Insurance & Financial Group scholarships. Since the program began in 1999, the Foundation has awarded 125 scholarships totaling $147,500.
This year’s Robert D. Mitus Scholarship recipients are:
- David Coviak, University of Michigan
- Alexandra Martella, University of Detroit Mercy
- Whitney Yahn, University of Michigan
- Alejandra Mejia, Baker College
- Keri Slane, Kellogg Community College
- Emily Smajda, Kellogg Community College
- Megan Hopp, Delta College
The John G. Nolen Scholarship is given to a third-year dental student at the University of Michigan. This year’s recipient is Kathryn Swanson.
The Michigan Dental Foundation George Bletsas Scholarship is awarded to a third-year dental student at the University of Detroit Mercy. This year’s recipient is Eric Harrison.
Finally, the Bill Schumann/MDA Insurance & Financial Group Scholarship is awarded to a fourth-year dental student attending the University of Michigan. This year’s recipient is Emily Kennedy.
